Mental vs Physical Fatigue: How to Tell Them Apart in Athletes

Mental fatigue differs from physical fatigue because it can reduce endurance and the quality of decisions without changing heart rate, lactate or oxygen uptake: what rises is the perception of effort [1] [2]. Cardiac markers alone are therefore not enough to detect it.

Two kinds of fatigue, two mechanisms

Physical fatigue stems from the body's effort: the muscles, the cardiovascular system and available energy. It is well captured by the usual tools of sport, such as power, heart rate or lactate.

Mental fatigue sets in after prolonged or demanding cognitive activity: sustained concentration, repeated decisions, analysis. It shows up as a feeling of tiredness, slower decisions and less stable attention. It can build up without any physical effort at all.

The study that opened the field

In 2009, a research team asked 16 participants to complete 90 minutes of a demanding cognitive task before a cycling endurance test. After the task, time to exhaustion averaged 640 seconds, against 754 seconds in the control condition [1].

The most striking finding lies in what did not change: cardiorespiratory responses were the same in both conditions. What differed was the perception of effort, which was higher after mental fatigue [1]. The athletes stopped earlier because the effort felt harder, not because their bodies were more exhausted.

What mental fatigue changes, and what it does not

A 2017 systematic review confirms this profile. Mental fatigue impairs endurance performance and increases perceived exertion, while heart rate, lactate and oxygen uptake are unaffected. Nor are maximal strength and anaerobic power [2].

In sport-specific skills, a review of 21 articles shows that mental fatigue impairs decision-making, reaction time and accuracy, again with no physiological change to account for it [4].

A real effect, with caveats

The science is not unanimous on the size of the phenomenon. A 2020 meta-analysis corrected its results for publication bias, the tendency for studies that find an effect to be published more readily. The effect of mental fatigue on physical performance then dropped from a moderate level (dz = 0.50) to a small, non-significant one (dz = 0.08) [3].

The reasonable conclusion is therefore a cautious one: mental fatigue can weigh on performance, particularly in endurance and in decision-making, but its effect varies across athletes, sports and situations. All the more reason to measure it rather than assume it.

Why the heart is not enough, and what EEG adds

Since heart rate and lactate do not move under mental fatigue, the usual training monitoring tools do not see it [2]. An athlete can show normal physical indicators and still be less sharp.

Brain activity, on the other hand, does change. A meta-analysis of 21 studies shows that mental fatigue comes with increased EEG activity, notably in the theta and alpha bands (g = 0.68) [5].

Rigour is still required: theta also rises when the cognitive load of a task increases [6]. Telling mental fatigue apart from momentary load therefore means tracking changes over time and referencing each measurement to the athlete's own baseline.

What this changes for training

  • Account for cognitive load in planning, not just physical load.
  • Pay close attention to the sessions and competitions where endurance and decisions matter most.
  • Do not conclude that recovery is complete on the basis of normal cardiac indicators alone.
  • Track each athlete over time, against themselves, rather than against a group norm.

How can you tell whether you are mentally or physically tired?

Can mental fatigue be measured with EEG?

EEG shows increased activity, notably in theta and alpha, under mental fatigue. Because theta also rises with cognitive load, interpretation requires tracking over time and a baseline specific to each athlete.
